2022 - Children's Unit Update

We did it!!!

With your collective generosity and long term support the 80 bed Children's Unit has been fully renovated and the doors are wide open welcoming the many poorly babies and children from across the region including neighbouring Senegal. January 2021 was my first visit in two years, my eldest son Grant joined me along with long term volunteers Jeannette Payne, who is a specialist neonatal nurse, and her husband Chris who is always happy to turn his hand to any DIY jobs.

We were able to see this very busy department looking magnificent, after a total refurbishment costing £60,000 to include an additional Premature baby unit, a dedicated Intensive Care area, Isolation bay for burns patients and a dressings room, all departments are now fully operational. Every pair of hands are needed to manage this exceptionally busy unit.... every bed was occupied not only in paediatrics but throughout the entire hospital. I met with Dr Juliet, first Gambian female doctor to work in BH, what a delight it was to meet this hard-working and impressive Doctor who cares so deeply for her patients.

To help with the problems faced with Covid-19 an Infection Control Officer has been employed, he now occupies one of the newly renovated homes that were sponsored by our long term supporters “The Livingstone Family”

As a token of your generosity my youngest son Laurence Smith prepared a large heart with every person's name who had contributed towards the Children's Unit's renovations, thank you to Jeff of Admiral Design and Print in Wellingborough for not hesitating to offer their printing services.

Very best wishes from the Management and Staff and myself, what a wonderful start to 2022!

Anita
